A surge in laboratory research into the pharmacological properties of bioactive compounds, as well their potential to cure a wide range ailments, has resulted an influx new herbal medications and extracts onto international market recent years. D. gangaticum (L.) (DG), one essential herbs Indian traditional system medicines is part many formulations viz. "Dashamoola" used treat various diseases. It perennial herb, locally known "Shalparni" (Hindi) India also reported other tropical countries. This review presents uses, phytochemistry, pharmacology, clinical effectiveness Literature was systematically searched through databases, journals gray literature electronic manual search. Collected data further critically reviewed summarized this paper. contains bio-active phytochemicals gangeticoside, leonuriside A, tortoside dehydrosoyasaponin, gangetin, gangetinin, desmocarpin, desmodin etc. among them, some have drug likeliness properties. Critical analysis revealed that it possessed activities anti-inflammatory, antinociceptive, anti- oxidant, cardioprotective, antidiabetic hepatoprotective bacterial, anti-amnesic activities. Despite large number therapeutic evaluated for limited efficacy trials evidence suggested may benefits on bronchitis, gout, hypertension. The biochemical physiological mechanisms involved different biological effects exhibited by need be investigated. herb should investigated further, focusing pharmacodynamic, pharmacokinetic safety profiles.
